Smart Swim 2 Goggles
Fancy gadgets and swimming haven't always been synonymous. We all know the hardcore swimmer than swears by the pace clock. We've even been those swimmers at times! But the introduction of the FORM Smart Swim goggles have completely changed our way of thinking. Immediately, our swimming was amplified. It was like having a swim coach, pace clock, and Garmin underwater with us. The goggles heads-up display led us through a workout while showing us pace, heart rate (yeah, for real, heart rate in the water), and stroke rate. It even led us through a workout; counting our intervals and counting down our rest. We found this new swimming experience to be invigorating. Lonely trips to the rec center pool became as beneficial as the hardest Masters Swim practices. We were blown away before we even took these goggles into the open water.

I’ve been a user of Form goggles for a couple years now. I first purchased the Form goggles (v1) with a little skepticism but found them so useful I subsequently purchased pairs for my wife and mom. I’ve since upgraded to v2. Things I love and have used extensively are the ability to build, add, and follow workouts within the goggles—that’s really improved my pool training. I’m better about keeping track of sets and no more wet paper workouts on kickboards required. I love the real-time metrics, and recent enhancements like HeadCoach not only help me focus on areas of improvement (while swimming!), they provide a little fun distraction from the endless black line at the bottom of the pool. I’ve used many of the Form training plans successfully while training for triathlons up to 70.3 distance and now benefit from the TrainingPeaks integration for more advanced workouts. The mobile app is very intuitive for building workouts, though I wish there were a desktop option. I’ve also used the goggles in open water and triathlons. While not required, I pair them with a Garmin watch and love seeing real-time metrics. The recent SwimStraight tech, while not replacing the need for sighting, has been a game changer for this directionally challenged swimmer. And for those with aging eyes needing reading glasses, there’s no issue reading stats in-goggle. I love these things and have just 3 cons: 1. The form factor could be slimmer, and vision is more limited than with regular goggles—though that’s a tradeoff for the in-goggle data. 2. The goggles sometimes miss kick sets; I wish I could manually record those instead of skipping ahead. 3. The first few seconds of every interval seem short, which I’d love to see improved, especially for interval-based skill sets.
